In the Morning I’ll Be Gone is the third entry in Adrian McKinty’s Sean Duffy series. Duffy is a Catholic outsider in the Protestant Royal Ulster Constabulary. He is an exceptional detective, long on talent and short on respect for his superiors. After being kicked out of the RUC, he is recruited by MI5 to help find an IRA bomb maker after the notorious jailbreak from the Maze Prison. The tale combines a suspenseful manhunt and a clever locked room murder mystery. The politics and culture of the early 1980s in Northern Ireland is authentically portrayed. The tension and violence of the Troubles makes for an atmospheric, fraught read. McKinty’s plot is thoughtful, his writing intelligent, and the voice of his main character is irreverent, dry, and witty.
