Thomas Perry’s latest release, The Burglar, once again showcases why the author is one of the best writers in the genre, skilled at weaving a mystery that keeps the reader engaged and forming characters perfectly suited to the plot. When Elle, the titular thief, uncovers a grisly trio of murders on the job, violence follows her into her private inner circle. On the run for her life, she makes it her mission to solve the triple homicide. And so the burglar becomes an investigator.

Elle is a refreshing character: crafty, witty, and possessed with a keen ability to think on her feet. She is unapologetic about her profession but also not unaware of the psychological repercussions of her victims. One of Perry’s greatest strengths as a writer lies in his attention to detail and the new perspective he presents readers through his more unorthodox characters. His writing style is an engaging one, and in this tale the plot is taut and the pace is tense throughout.

Perry’s latest takes the reader to the side of Los Angeles known for its glitz and glamour, to the extreme wealth and opulence of Bel-Air and Beverly Hills, to the world of esteemed museums and far-sighted art deals, and to the underbelly where stolen goods are haggled over and covertly moved. The Burglar is a smart, swift read that will have you holding your breath right along with Elle, hoping she manages to stay one step ahead of a determined, shadowy killer.

Highly recommended for fans of mystery thrillers with strong, clever female protagonists with a knack for picking locks and stealing jewels.
