The Woman in the Window is A.J. Finn’s debut novel, but the author’s writing style is that of a seasoned expert in the craft. The writing is impeccable, the descriptions vivid and detailed, the mundane given startling poeticism, the twisted labyrinths of the psyche viscerally portrayed. I found this to be an immersive tale, a psychological thriller in the truest sense as I was pulled into the protagonist’s wounded mind.

The lead character is drawn with a deft hand, her disjointed thoughts, self medication, depression, and phobia portrayed with such authenticity that I could not help but feel compassion for her. The stream of consciousness style is perfect for the genre. My only complaint is that the character’s drinking habits take up the majority of the word count, and the attention given to that habit began to wear thin and slow down the plot. The plot itself was fairly transparent, and there were no shocking twists that I did not see coming.

The fragmented storytelling and the superb writing made Mr. Finn’s work an engaging, page-turning read, and I look forward to reading the author’s future releases.
